Who We Are
S. Stephen's is an Episcopal church located on Providence's College Hill in the midst of Brown University. We stand in the tradition of Anglo-Catholicism, a movement emphasizing God’s continuing presence in our lives through the liturgy and Sacraments, and the spiritual unity of the Church in all times and places. Our chief focus is worship, which demands the very best we can offer – intellectually, musically, and artistically. At the same time, we are committed to serving the communities around us: from the university, to our neighborhood, city, and state, to all those in need.
All are welcome at S. Stephen's. We were one of the first racially integrated parishes in the United States, from the 1850s – before the Civil War. We continue to be a diverse community of Christians from all walks of life and all demographic categories. We invite you to spend a few moments with us: on this website, at one of our daily services, on a Sunday morning, or at one of our programs and events. Our prayer for you is that, whatever your contact with us, God will be with you, to uphold you in love and establish you in peace.
